Solar Tubes – Perfect For Underground Homes

Extending homes underground, or including underground sections in new buildings, has been increasing in popularity in recent years. This is partly due to the high costs of land as well as the restricted space in our towns and cities. Making the most of the space you have available is paramount and modern damp-proof membranes and insulators make warm and dry underground rooms easier to achieve. Once you have your warm, dry rooms, you need to find a way to light them, and solar tubes can easily deliver natural lighting to turn them into bright, homely spaces.

Unbelievable as it may sound, Tubular Daylight Systems can actually deliver a brighter room than traditional windows! This is primarily because the sun tunnels’ light collectors will all be facing the light source (the sun and sky) while conventional windows look out horizontally so they are limited by facing the wrong way (north facing will receive less light) or potentially being shaded by other buildings or trees.

Often in underground homes the size of aperture you can use for lighting is restricted. In this case a sun tunnel can deliver a massive amount of light through a comparatively small aperture, while a skylight would need to be much bigger for the same amount of light.
